Winifred Grace Equine Rescue & Retirement Organization is named after our grandmothers.

Our MISSION is to provide permanent sanctuary to horses in need of a home.

We are small-time and run entirely by a mother/daughter team with the help of a few very special volunteers.

We do not buy, sell, trade, adopt or breed horses. We are not riders or trainers. We do not provide critical care and rehab to severely ill animals; rather we provide a permanent home to local abandoned and neglected horses.

Our adventure with horses began in February 2002 when we moved into a rental cottage on a large farm. We discovered a herd of over 50 unattended horses living on the farm without necessities such as water, hay, farrier services and vet care. Over 30 of these horses were bred mares who began foaling in the fields shortly after our arrival. These births had been compromised due to a toxic fungus on the pasture grass which was the mares' only source of food. We were able to save 5 babies and all but 3 of the mares. The enormity of the neglect and suffering affected us for life.

When we consulted the property owner about the horses, he decided they should all be sent to auction. Needless to say, we disagreed.

We spent month after month attempting to determine who the horses actually belonged to. Those in the worst condition were referred to a nearby veterinary hospital. We started leasing local farmland for the remaining horses at our own expense and subsequently established a non-profit organization in the hope of raising funds to help pay for hay, vet care, and farrier service.

For 8 years now the horses have thrived in large pastures with freedom, social interaction, and the security of the herd.
Our mission is to ensure that they will not again be neglected, bred, auctioned or sold.

Our founder Janet Milloy went on to earn a Certificate of Equine Science after completing two years of classes at Lord Fairfax Community College. She continues to represent our organization at events such as the Humane Society's TAFA.

We welcome visitors and greatly appreciate your support!
